Calm Birth & Mothercare

Laurette C Brand

I am a "Doula" which means Caregiver or Servant of a pregnant woman.

I have been a Doula for over 15 years and have assisted 538+ births. I am your advisor pre-birth, and an assistant at the delivery of your baby. I give no medical advice.

My goal is to help you achieve the birthing experience you want, as well as the environment and support structure you deserve. I want to help in such a way that it makes a difference to you, your baby and your family.  I want a high love-environment for you and baby.

I believe that birth should be a calming experience and that your baby should come into this world in an environment which is calm, loving and as drug-free as possible.

I assist you with pain management using advanced techniques, massages and by helping you embrace positive self-talk.

It would be the most wonderful privilege to be at the birth of your baby.

My Doula Training

I am a DOSA (Doulas of South Africa) Doula.  My training was done with Village Doulas and Sacred Space Doulas.

I have completed advanced technique training with midwife, Jacky Bloomraad de Boer, this included moxa, cupping, rebozo techniques, pressure points and homeopath remedies in labour.

I have also trained with midwife Ruth Ehrhardt. This included listening skills, dealing with sexual abuse, trigger points and tapping into techniques which assist in helping babies breathe more comfortably.

I have trained with Chrissie Smith-Schuler on belly binding.

I have done Bereavement Doula training with Mama Nurture.

I have also done breastfeeding training with author and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Marie-Louise Steyn.

Prenatal Support

Prenatal visits will be set up to get to know each other better. These are important so that I understand your wishes and preferences prior to your baby's birth.
I will provide physical and emotional support. I offer pregnancy massages, rebozo closing and body-touch techniques - all in the comfort of your own home.

Birthing Guidance

As your Doula, I will also provide emotional and physical reassurance and assistance at your baby's birth. I will assist you in pain management during your birth.
The techniques I use include: massages, rebozo, moxa, cupping, pressure point and homeopathic remedies.
My intent is to have your baby enter this world in a calm way, and as drug-free as possible.

Support after the Birth

Now that your baby has arrived, you will want more guidance and support... I will be available to provide that support to you and your family after your baby's birth.  For example, I can provide breastfeeding support.  Note that I am not a lactation consultant, but have done breastfeeding training with author and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Marie-Louise Steyn.

Nanny & Cleaner Training

A well-trained nanny or cleaning maid at home can be an amazing asset to the family of a newborn. This could be a dedicated nanny, someone who does both cleaning and baby care, or only cleaning.
I offer training services to ensure that your nanny or cleaning maid is also ready for the arrival of your baby. I assist in teaching appropriate cleaning and hygiene techniques using the colour-coded system and as well as how to work efficiently.
I am able to train either your current, or brand new, nanny at your home or mine. I am able to do one-on-one training sessions or group sessions.

The Rebozo Technique

Rebozo is the use of colored cloths. This is a technique used to close-off the birth and is also known as the final sealing process for the mother. It is also known as the "Bone Closing Ceremony" and is a traditional ritual used by Mexican women. This technique requires me to tie your body with colorful cloths from your head to your feet. I have found this to be beneficial with the Body-Touch. Body-Touch consists of me gently squeezing the body instead of rubbing the body (like in a massage).  While I gently squeeze, you are able to acknowledge your body to yourself.
